An application must also know who is calling it, where source documents live, which agent or tool identity may access those documents, how changes are deployed and what happens when a model or search service becomes unavailable. Those decisions connect directly to the planning-and-management objectives for AI-103. The useful engineering exercise is to explain each boundary and test its failure, not to memorize a portal’s current menu layout.

Consider a fictional manufacturer that wants an assistant for service technicians. Users ask questions about maintenance manuals, identify compatible replacement components and prepare repair requests. The application may recommend a component but cannot purchase it. A service API makes the authorization decision, and a manager approves any transaction. This distinction shapes deployment identities, retrieval permissions and how state is recovered after a timeout. It also separates the agent’s suggested action from a verified change in the system of record.

Match the Foundry architecture to the workload

Begin with the application’s actual requests: short classification, multi-page document reasoning, search-grounded answers, image analysis or multi-step tool orchestration. Define expected input sizes, response latency, concurrency, regional constraints, data sensitivity and cost. Model selection belongs in this discussion but cannot replace it. A small model with a precise output schema may be sufficient for classification; a multimodal model may be needed for photos; a tool and search integration may be more important than model size for current business facts.

A practical system map should show the authenticated client, the application API, Foundry project, selected model deployments, agent runtime if needed, search and source stores, tool APIs and telemetry. Label arrows with data types and identity boundaries. A user may ask the assistant for a repair recommendation, but the application must decide whether that same user is authorized to view the manual for a restricted device. A deployed model cannot infer correct authorization from polite wording in a prompt.

Microsoft’s Foundry model-deployment guidance distinguishes model availability, region, deployment choice, quotas and inference usage. Record the real deployment ID, supported model features and service location rather than embedding an assumed name in every environment. A deployment change can alter tool behavior, token cost and latency, so it belongs in a reviewed release even when the application code is untouched.

Define development, staging and production boundaries

Development experiments should not silently modify a production agent or index. Separate environments according to ownership, risk and deployment needs. For smaller teams, projects and scoped access may provide adequate segmentation; regulated data or independent networking could justify distinct Azure resources or subscriptions. The design question is whether a test operator could accidentally access restricted production source material or affect live customer traffic.

Choose where agent state and files are stored. Microsoft’s standard-agent setup describes customer-managed Azure resources used to keep files and conversation state under the organization’s control. That can suit sovereignty and isolation requirements, while a simpler managed setup reduces operational overhead. More resources also mean more permissions, backups, network dependencies and incident paths. Make that trade-off explicit; greater infrastructure complexity is not automatically better security.

For the fictional repair assistant, keep a revisioned source-document repository, index generation version, model deployment version and application release identifier. A query about a manual should be traceable to the specific approved document and index state used. If a technician complains that the assistant showed an obsolete procedure, the team needs evidence to determine whether the index was stale or the agent misread the retrieved passage. Without such identifiers, a rollback becomes guesswork.

Make identity roles match real operations

Microsoft Entra authentication and Azure role assignments form the foundation for access to projects, models, agents and data services. Developers who configure a project need different permissions from technicians who only invoke an agent. Current Foundry documentation includes a more narrowly scoped Agent Consumer role and describes role names that have changed during the Foundry naming transition. Verify which role and scope are effective in the environment instead of relying on an old screenshot or assuming that “reader” can invoke every agent.

Use managed or workload identities for service-to-service access when supported. Grant only the operations the workload needs. An assistant may read a protected search index without being permitted to rebuild that index or export the storage account. A release pipeline may update deployments without reading customer conversation content. A purchase execution service should own its own authorization boundary even when an agent proposes an action. A model-generated tool request is data to validate, not an administrator instruction.

The Microsoft AI workload security boundary includes prompts, agents, tools and source data: each needs a named principal, a specific allowed operation and an auditable control. Capture principal, resource, allowed operation, environment, retention and evidence in one practical access table. Test denial conditions using synthetic users from different business groups. A successful admin demonstration says little about whether real least-privilege access is functioning.

Some integrations still require credentials. Azure Key Vault can protect secrets and keys, but a vault with excessive access permissions or a public network path can still expose risk. Plan key rotation, recoverability, role assignments and monitoring. Prefer identity-based access over spreading credentials into prompts, build scripts, logs or repository files.

Network isolation requires an end-to-end path

The user-facing client may be public while source storage and sensitive business APIs stay restricted. Define the intended traffic flow: which services need inbound connections, which require outbound calls and which resources have private endpoints or DNS dependencies. Microsoft’s Foundry networking guidance notes that networking behavior can vary by agent type and deployment mode; protecting the main Foundry resource does not always protect every dependent storage or search service automatically.

Test the network from the real execution identity. A developer using a local VPN may reach a private index even when a hosted runtime cannot. A pipeline can create a model deployment but fail to read its required configuration in a private resource. Verify each dependency before production, including the user’s path, runtime identity and deployment job. Keep a documented failure response for unavailable network connections so the assistant does not answer from a guessed or stale policy.

Some networking or agent-hosting capabilities have explicit preview limitations and regional differences. Do not market them as universally available. A system containing sensitive documents may need a different deployment type or additional architectural controls if a preview endpoint does not meet privacy requirements. Record these constraints in the decision register rather than hiding them under “secure by default.”

Plan quotas, concurrency and failure handling together

Azure model inference consumes throughput budget, and limits vary by model, subscription, deployment type and service policy. Estimate requests per minute, tokens per request, bursts and expected concurrent sessions. Longer documents and multimodal inputs can consume more resources than typical text chat. A realistic load test should include a mixture of small requests, a burst after a maintenance shift change and a few unusually large fault reports.

Handle rate limiting with bounded retries, deadlines and controlled backoff. An HTTP 429 response does not mean the model has produced an answer. Returning a fabricated result to avoid user frustration would be a more serious failure than explaining the temporary limit. Read-only retrieval calls may often be retried; state-changing tool calls need idempotency keys and a transaction-status lookup. If an order API times out after receiving a request, retrying blindly can create a duplicate purchase.

Cost planning includes model calls, agent hosting where applicable, search, state storage, ingestion and monitoring. A high-quality model may reduce downstream rework, but that benefit must be measured rather than asserted. For the repair assistant, compare the cost of a longer reasoning response with the impact of a mistaken part recommendation, and include human review costs for ambiguous cases. Quota increase is not a substitute for removing wasteful or looping calls.

Promote the whole AI configuration through CI/CD

AI software release state includes more than Python files. A new prompt, safety setting, model deployment, agent tool schema or search-index version can change behavior without a code commit. Version each relevant component and maintain an expected deployment manifest. Infrastructure can be expressed through supported tools such as Bicep or Terraform, while agent deployment workflows should follow Microsoft’s current version-appropriate guidance. The hosted-agent CI/CD documentation also calls out preview-specific capabilities, so implementation details must be validated for the selected runtime.

Make release safety observable with a controlled rollback experiment. First promote a prompt version while holding model deployment, indexed documents and tool schemas constant; then change a retrieval schema and verify whether the same questions still return authorized, grounded answers. If evidence changed, reverting only the prompt cannot guarantee restoration. Record deployment IDs, effective role assignments and real traces before labeling a rollback successful. In an AI-103 Foundry-deployment practice case, the important decision is which configurations form one release boundary and which failed checks stop promotion, not which button in a portal deploys fastest.

Before promotion, test identity and role assignments, model invocation, search relevance, tool errors, safety refusals and application health. Use representative acceptance data and a holdout that has not been repeatedly tuned against the new configuration. A rollback must consider model and tool versions, not just application code. If the old prompt depends on an index schema that was replaced, restoring the prompt cannot restore correctness by itself.

For a high-impact business integration, require an explicit approval record tied to the release and the environment. The pipeline should not gain a standing right to bypass business-transaction controls merely because it can deploy the agent. Maintain a documented route to disable a malfunctioning tool or revert the serving version without destroying audit evidence or source data.

Design monitoring to explain an incident

Observe model and retrieval latency, failed tool calls, authorization failures, cost, indexing freshness and output-grounding quality. A model call returning successfully does not prove that its answer cites the correct manual. Traces should connect the initial request to the search results, chosen model deployment, tool proposals, validated execution and final user-visible answer. Preserve enough version and source identifiers to reconstruct a defect without logging unrestricted private documents.

Run a tabletop incident. A technician asks for part compatibility, the index serves a two-month-old maintenance note, and the agent proposes an unavailable replacement. Determine which event would reveal the stale document, how an operator identifies the affected index revision and how the application responds while reindexing occurs. A complete incident plan addresses recovery, customer explanation, data quality and prevention; it is more useful than a dashboard that only shows average token consumption.

The central architecture principle is to allocate responsibilities clearly. Models can interpret and propose; identity and source services supply bounded context; application and business APIs enforce real policy; humans approve consequential actions; telemetry and deployment records preserve evidence. AI-103 preparation benefits from explaining why each boundary exists and which test proves it is working.

Plan Microsoft Foundry architecture for Azure AI-103: model deployments, environments, managed identities, networking, quotas, CI/CD and observability.

[1

post-4031","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
